Caltech had
the second-greatest number of U.S. patents among national universities
in 2003, the Sacramento Business Journal reported February 12. According
to preliminary figures released by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office,
Caltech was awarded 139 patents, second only to the nine combined campuses
of the University of California, which received a total of 439 patents.
MIT, the University of Texas, and Stanford were third, fourth, and fifth,
with 127, 96, and 85 patents, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 were
the University of Wisconsin (84 patents); Johns Hopkins (70); the University
of Michigan (63); Columbia (61); and Cornell and the University of Florida
(59 each).
